Lot Essay

Compare the very similar figures which formed part of the 'Nanking' cargo salvaged from the shipwrecked Geldermalsen, which sank in 1752, and which was sold Christie's Amsterdam 28 April - 2 May 1986. See C. Sheaf and R. Kilburn, The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes, 1988, pp.153-158, and pl.208 for a very comparable 'piggy-back' group.
