In the 18th Century the shaped oval bread baskets became popular in Dutch households. Large bread baskets, mainly oval, of high quality were made by skilled craftsmen like Isacq Samuel Busard and Engelbart Joosten from The Hague. In the first half of the 19th century the bread basket was gradually replaced by the oblong cake basket that may also have been used for serving bread
