Mumei (Sengo school of Ise), Muromachi/Momoyama Period (16th Century), Tanto Mei: Bishu Osafune Norimitsu, Muromachi Period (15-16th Century)
The blade hirazukuri, iorimune, itame hada with ji-nie, midare-notare hamon of nie with mizukage, carved with tsure-bi and futasuji-bi, ubu nakago, 13in. (34.8cm.); in its ribbed brown lacquer saya, matching iron mounts with 'toadskin' surface and gilt rims, the fuchi and koiguchi widened to simulate a tsuba, gilt copper menuki of fruit, shiiremono kozuka, 19th century; the second blade hira zukuri, itame hada with ji-nie, komidare hamon of nioi with mizukage, ubu nakago, 11in. (29.8cm); in its natural wood saya decorated with a spiders web in gold lacquer, the spider and insects inlaid with mother of pearl, horn and coral, the tsuka similarly decorated, plain horn saya and tsuka fittings, horn kozuka inlaid with a gourd and foliage in horn and mother of pearl, 19th century (2)
