DRAFTS OF RANDOM HARVEST
Random Harvest is the story of World War I veteran Charles Rainier, a shell-shocked amnesia victim who walks out of a sanitorium on armistice day to begin a new life with a new identity. He finds work, falls in love, marries and starts a family, only to one day regain the memory of his earlier life -- and lose that of his two years as an amnesiac. The finished novel features a very complicated narrative structure, opening 20 years after Rainier regains his memory, flashing back over those 20 years, then covering the two years of amnesia before returning to the narrative present. We can see Hilton experimenting in these drafts, employing a variety of different plot and voice devices, not all of which make it into the final version. Random Harvest was filmed in 1942, directed by Mervyn LeRoy and starring Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson. It went on to become one of the top-grossing films of that year.
