A NEOLITHIC BLACK POTTERY CUP
LONGSHAN CULTURE, CIRCA 2500 B.C.

Thinly potted, the body divided by a narrow median band below which the body tapers in a gentle curve to the flat base and above which it tapers in a more elongated curve before flaring outwards to the mouth rim, the polished black ware showing concentric pottery marks, some restoration--5¼in. (13.3cm.) high

This vessel is of a type called hu by the Chinese archaeologists who unearthed similar vessels at the Chengzi site in Zuchengxian, Shandong province, from the stratum corresponding to the Longshan culture.
