A WELL-CARVED WHITE JADE MYTHICAL BEAST GROUP
SONG/MING DYNASTY
The mythical beast shown in a recumbent position, its head turned back towards the cub crawling up onto its rear haunches, well detailed with comma-shaped eye-lids tapering backwards towards the curved ears and with curled-under claws, both with scrolls carved in low relief on the haunches and with the addition of dots in one scroll on the adult, with finely incised hair markings on the edge of their legs, the adult's mane, along the cub's backbone and on both of their tails which overlap on the underside, the stone softly polished, with some earth encrustation on the underside--2 5/8in. (6.7cm.) long, wood stand
