THREE MAGIC SCROLLS, in Ge'ez, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

Ethiopia, 19th century
Scrolls containing the following prayers:
1. To drive away evil spirits causing sharp pains and rheumatism, for a woman named Welte-Madhev, 1150 x 193mm, 3 membranes, column of text written in red and black ink in a neat traditional hand, 2 illustrations: Guardian angel; face within wing/halo-like surround (small tears to edges with some loss)
2. To expel evil spirits, for a man named Cebresalassie, 1660 x 75mm, 2 membranes, column of text written in black and red ink in a neat traditional hand, with line border, 4 illustrations in red, black and yellow: Guardian angel; 2 Seals of Solomon; apotropaic diagram incorporating a face and symbols within 12-square frame (later ink annotations on verso)
3. To drive away evil spirits causing stomach ache, for a man named Kinfe-Mikael, 820 x 95mm, single membrane, column of text written in black and red ink in a traditional hand, 3 illustrations of the Seal of Solomon, (browned, small hole affecting text) (3)
