LITURGY, Greek Rite: eia Leitourgiai, in Greek and Latin. Venice: G.A. Nicolini da Sabbio for Demitrius Zenos of Zakynthos and Menandros Noukios of Corfu, August 1528.

4 (201 x 138mm). Printed in red and black. Full-page woodcut of St. John Chrysostom, woodcut headpieces and initials. Later vellum, title lettered on spine, speckled edges (light stains). Provenance: stamp removed from title; Franceso Casella, bookseller of Naples (19th-century label).

Unique for Greek liturgical works of the early 16th century, this edition of the eitourgiai is accompanied by a Latin translation. That, and the fact that it omits the parts chanted by the choir, indicate strongly that the edition was almost certainly not intended for liturgical use but for humanists and scholars (cf. E. Layton, The 16th-century Greek Book in Italy, p.547). Adams L-838; Brunet III, 536 ('rare'); Sander 3646
