PINDAR (522?-443 B.C.). Olympia. Pythia. Nemea. Isthmia Callimachi hymni...Dionysius de situ orbis. Licophronis Alexandra, obscurum poema . Venice: Aldus Manutius and Andreas Torresanus, January 1513.
8 (144 x 91mm). Title in Greek and Latin, text in Greek, woodcut Aldine device 5 on title. (Without final blank, lightly washed.) Red janseniste morocco by Chambolle Duru (hinges lightly rubbed).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Pindar and the Lycophron and second edition in Greek of the other two works. Renouard, loc. cit., claims that the Dionysius is also an editio princeps, but was obviously unaware of the Ferrara, 1512, edition which was printed in Greek and Latin. In his preface to Andrea Navagero, the great classicist and neo-latin poet, Aldus stated his intention to publish scholia on several Greek poets, Pindar, Euripides and Hesiod included; but unfortunately this venture never came about. Adams 1218; Renouard Alde, 64:9; Hoffmann III, p.96.
