Lot Essay

The view is taken looking towards St. Paul's Cathedral and Blackfriars Bridge, with the terrace of Somerset House on the left, built in the last quarter of the 18th century to the design of Sir William Chambers. Its relationship to the Thames was soon to be irrevocably altered with the construction of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's Victoria Embankment between 1864 and 1872.
