Lot Essay

The view is taken from Greenwich Reach with the Greenwich Hospital viewed from the East Greenwich strand. Other recognisable buildings include Enderby House, with the Telegraph Works behind it, on the left.
Henry Pether was the son of the painter Abraham Pether (1756-1812) and brother of Sebastian Pether (1790-1844). Henry, was a painter of landscapes, especially by moonlight, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1828 to 1862.
