Lot Essay

The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, was founded by Charles II as a home for veteran soldiers. There are about 420 in-pensioners who are divided into six companies. Men over 65 have a navy blue uniform in winter and a light scarlet one in summer which dates from the 18th century. A three-cornered hat is worn on special occasions such as Oak Apple Day (29 May) when pensioners parade in the central quadrangle, in honour of their royal founder's birthday. On this occasion oak foliage decorates the large statue of Charles II and sprigs are carried by pensioners. In autumn a Harvest Festival parade takes place.

Born in Calcutta, the son of a Major-General, Beadle studied at the Slade School under Legros, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Cabanel, and then in London under G.F. Watts. He exhibited in Paris, and at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhwere in London.
