Lot Essay

In the foreground is the mascot dog 'Chance' which for about thirteen years followed the fire engines. He had a collar with the inscription: 'Stop me not but onward let me jog for I am Chance the London Firemans dog.'

Watling Street was first mentioned in 1230 and was probably a side street of the main Roman Watling Street which runs between Dover and St Albans.
