Lot Essay

Born in Canada, Richard George Mathews moved to London in 1907. During the Second World War he recorded the devastation in the city and in Hampstead where he lived.

During the aerial bombardment of the Second World War St. Paul's Cathedral was remarkably unharmed despite being a particularly vulnerable target.
