John Minton attended St. John's Wood School of Art from 1935-8 and the following year visited Paris where he was influenced by French Neo-Romantic painting. Back in London he shared studios with Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Keith Vaughan which strengthened his association with the English Neo-Romantic movement.
During the Second World War Minton was a conscientious objector and spent time wandering extensively through the London docks. He later returned to paint the river many times.
