A fine pair of 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter table globes, the terrestrial THE TWELVE INCH BRITISH Terrestrial Globe REPRESENTING THE ACCURATE POSITIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL KNOWN PLACES OF THE EARTH FROM THE DISCOVERIES OF CAPTAIN COOK AND SUBSEQUENT CIRCUMNAVIGATORS TO THE PRESENT PERIOD 1838 and overlaid cartouche at the bottom of the label reading W.& S Jones Holborn London, made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes in both directions, the Greenwich meridian ungraduated, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the oceans showing an analemma and a scale of Climates of hours in the Pacific Ocean, trade winds and the tracks of Captain Cook's three voyages with notes such as Captn. Cook going to America in 1778, Jan.1.1773 many Isles and firm fields of Ice and Return of the Resolution in 1780, further notes such as Lot's Wife probably the same as Rica d'Oro, Bouvets I. Seen by the Swan & Otter Octr.1808 and los Jardines or 12 Isles in the Spanish Charts, the Antarctic with no coastline save a small section, labelled Enderby Land 1831 and two notes reading 74.15'.most southern Lat. of Mr.Weddell 20 Febr[uary ....] and 71.10'.most so[uthern] Lat. of Capt[n. Cook ....], with printed hour dial bearing a faint inscription concerning the late T.M. Bardin, the continents with nation states coloured in green and yellow and showing numerous details such as towns, cities, caravan routes, rivers, mountains and notes such as LAND OF ENDRACHT 1615 and EDELENS LAND 1613 (Australia) and Copper Mine, Source of the Nile, Carn.of Sou to Mecca Suakam and Route of Denham & Clapperon (Africa), Africa further with place names such as Tibboo of BORGOO, MICOCCO FUNGENO and BARROLOOS BIRI, New Zealand with islands labelled EAHEINOMAUWE and TAVAIPOENAMOO (numerous neatly repaired areas of abrasion and cracks with very neat and detailed redrawing particularly to South Pole, some areas of discolouration); the celestial THE NEW TWELVE INCH British Celestial Globe Containing the exact pofitions of more than 3800 FIXD STARS, Nebul, Planetary Nebul, &c: according to the Lateft Difcoveries and Obfervations, of Dr.Mafkelyne, Dr.Herfchell, and other eminent Aftronomers, And adjusted to the present period 1800, a further cartouche overlaid near the trade label SOLD BY W & S. JONES, Holborn, London., made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the solstitial and equinoctial colures graduated in degrees, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and some scientific instruments and labelled in Latin, the stars shown to seven orders of magnitude and labelled with Arabic and Greek letters, some with catalogue numbers, the axis through the celestial Poles, the southern Pole with a printed hour dial (some areas of very neat restoration and detailed redrawing, old crack around the equator neatly repaired and neatly redrawn, some discolouration), both spheres with engraved brass hour dial, the terrestrial beneath and the celestial above the engraved brass meridian circle, the mahogany horizon with hand-coloured engraved paper ring graduated in degrees in both directions, wind directions, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, with names for the former and names, symbols and pictures for the latter, edged in red (some neat redrawing and discolouration), raised on four mahogany quadrant supports to turned central pillar (different) with three outswept legs with centrally mounted 5in. (14cm.) diameter dry-card compass with blued-steel needle -- 26in. (66cm.) high
