Sold with a contemporary newspaper cutting and and old War Office copy of what would appear to be the recipient's M.C. Recommendation.

M.C. London Gazette 5.7.1918 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst in the command of his Platoon he was responsible for getting in touch with the Battalion on the flank. The situation being obscure, he took out a patrol, ascertained the exact position of the enemy, and also the exact position of the Battalion on the flank. The information which he obtained was of the greatest value at a critical stage of the operations'.

Lieutenant Evan Murray MacGregor Balfour, M.C., served in D Squadron of the Imperial Light Horse in German South-West Africa and East Africa, prior to obtaining a Commission in the Scots Guards. Twice wounded, he won his M.C. for his bravery at Villers Plouich on the Cambrai Front on the night of 30.11.1917. Tragically, he was killed in action on 24.8.1918 in France and is buried in Berles New Military Cemetery.
