A RECOMMENDATION FOR LEVI DAVIS

In a letter to the President on 3 July 1861, Eleazar Paine, with support from "Capt. Luckie and other officers" recommends a Second Lieutenancy for Levi Davis in the Regular Army. On the verso of this letter, Lincoln writes: "The father of the young man - Levi Davis - within recommended for a Lieutenancy, is a very highly valued friend of mine of long standing; and Col. Paine - to say nothing of others who recommends him, is a fair officer educated at West Point and who served in the Florida War. I therefore hope a Lieutenancy can be found for him."

Lincoln's friend Levi Davis, the father of the young officer in question of the same name, was the cousin of Judge David Davis, Supreme Court Justice and Administrator of the estate of Abraham Lincoln. Levi Davis Jr. was first sergeant in the 9th Illinois Infantry and was commissioned second lieutenant of the 97th Illinois Infantry in January 1863.
