Lot Essay

The arms are those of Spencer.

The successor to the monteith, the verrière made its appearance during the late 18th century and was probably inspired by French examples by Robert-Joseph Auguste and others. A still-life by Madame Vallayer-Coster, dated 1787, depicts a verrière in use with the stems of glasses held in the notches of the rim.
