signed on the horizontal plate Butterfield A Paris, engraved for latitudes 43, 46, 49 and 52, with spring-loaded bird gnomon, engraved for latitudes 40-60, the compass with finely modelled blued-iron needle, with brass cap, the underside of the compass box and horizontal plate engraved with the latitudes of twenty-six continental cities and towns, contained in the original plush-lined fishskin-covered shaped case -- 2in. ( cm.) long
