A late 17th/early 18th-Century French ivory diptych dial,
signed on the cover C. BLOVD A DIEPPE, the cover further engraved with a horizontal dial with brass socket for pin gnomon, the quarters decorated with scrolling foliage, the inner face of the cover with latitude scale on one side 0-90, the white-metal calendar volvelles for months, days and hours, with rose-decorated centre and red coloured solar disc, with wheat ear engraved border and foliate and neo-classical decoration, with string gnomon dial, the horizontal dial with compass, the finely balanced blued-iron needle with brass cap, the pierced and decorated moving white-metal hour cursor over the printed paper compass card inscribed with the names and latitudes of major European cities and towns, with folding hinged silvered brass latitude arm, the quarters with similar decoration as the cover, the underside with rotating calendar volvelle signed Fait par Charles Bloud A Dieppe, similarly decorated as the other surfaces, with two brass hooks and retaining pins (defective) and similar hook and pin to one side to protect the pin-gnomon (missing) -- 3in. (8.2cm.) long
