Lot Essay

The name Vase 'Indien E' was given to the form of the present vases in 1814. However, there is no 18th century documentation to support the attribution. Their decoration is based on the contemporary Holzschnittblumen flowers painted at the Meissen factory. These, in turn, were based on engravings for the apothecary Johann Wilhelm Weinmann published in Eigentliche Vorstellung etlicher Tausend...Pflantzen, Regensburg, 1735 and arguably the seminal work on plants of the first half of the 18th century. A copy of this book has been at the Meissen factory since 1743.

See Tamara Praud and Antoine d'Albis, La Porcelaine de Vincennes, Paris, 1991, no. 76, p. 137 for a similar example without gilding, with no mark and dated circa 1748. As the present pair has gilt rims and footrims as well as factory marks, it can be convincingly dated to circa 1752.
