Lot Essay

The present lot has been together as now offered for a century and there is no doubt that all three pieces match. It is, however, important to note that cups and saucers of this type were not normally sold with covers. It is therefore reasonable to suppose that the cover in the present lot is from a pot sucre from the same service.

The caduceus mark found on the present cup and saucer is found on objects painted with landscapes between 1756-1759. It was ascribed to E. Gomery in the 19th century. Recent scholarship finds no basis for the attribution. However, as confirmed by the present examples, they are by a painter of considerable skill and imagination.
