Lot Essay

See Liana Paredes Arend, Svres Porcelain at Hillwood, Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington, D.C., 1998, pp. 72-73, fig. 49 for the djeuner 'losange' similarly decorated by Mreaud in 1767 acquired by Mrs. Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Charles-Louis Mreaud was active at Svres as a painter of flowers and patterns, 1756-1780. Factory and sales records show that he painted a substantial number of pieces in the elaborate frizes riches style of the present example during the years 1766-1768 during which time it was fashionable and in demand.
