Lot Essay

The figures on these bottles probably depict Dutch merchants. A single bottle of this rare design is in the Soares Collection, Lisbon, and is illustrated by M. Beurdeley, op.cit., 1962, cat.105, p.173; and another bottle from the Eymery collection, Paris, is illustrated by F. et N. Hervout and Y. Bruneau, op.cit., 1986, fig.4.66, together with a soup-plate and a plate decorated with similar scenes, figs.4.67 and 4.68.
