Lot Essay

This picture was attributed to Paolo Veneziano by Richard Offner (certificate of 24 March 1953, xerox available): he dated it to the 'middle of [Paolo's] career' and compared it specifically with the Saint Michael at Worcester, Mass., pointing out that it was originally the left shutter of a diptych or the central compartment of a tabernacle. Federico Zeri (certificate of 20 May 1953) concurred with Offner's attribution, rejecting the previous suggestion of Guariento, the outstanding Paduan artist of the same generation. Lionello Venturi (certificate of 26 May 1953) endorsed the attribution to Paolo and proposed a dating to between 1340 and 1350.

The art historian, Raimond van Marle (1887-1936), is best remembered for his nineteen-volume series, The Development of the Italian Schools of Painting (1923-38); much of his collection is now in the Sacro Convento, Assisi.
