Cantelbeek, who was active in Antwerp at the turn of the seventeenth century, was a pupil of Jacob van Hal (1672-1750). The composition of the former picture is repeated in a larger work on canvas sold at Christie's, South Kensington, 27 October 1999, lot 317 (one of a pair).
