Lot Essay

The attribution is based on comparison with Grondonck's only known painting, signed and dated 1617, which was with Galerie De Jonckheere, Paris, 1989 (see J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, Brussels, 1994, I, p. 188, II, p. 512, illustrated). The Jonckheere painting is based on an engraving by Boetius Adams Bolswert after David Vinckboons (Hollstein III, 320) and the present picture seems also to derive from a Vinckboons' prototype.
