AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE PLATE ATTRIBUTED TO NEAR THE READY PAINTER
550-540 B.C.
Obverse: departure of a warrior, an armed hoplite standing in profile to the left, wearing greaves, plumed Corinthian helmet and cloak, holding a circular shield with tripod device, flanked by two bearded draped men wrapped in himations, one holding a spear, the other a staff, on groundline, details incised and in added purple, black glazed border
Reverse: alternating reserved and black glazed concentric circles, black glazed border
Rim pierced twice
10½ in. (26.4 cm.) diam.

Callipolitis-Feytmans suggests that the plate recalls those of the Snake-and-Spots Group.
