In the manner of George Smith, each with outscrolled back with reeded bar above partially padded arms and caned seat with loose cushion covered in machine-woven cotton, on ram's mask monopodia supports with hoof feet (re-decorated) (2)

Lot Essay

The design of these chairs is based on a pattern in George Smith's A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture of 1808, pl.56; and another published in Ackermann's The Repository of Arts in 1814 (reproduced in P.Agius, ed., Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, 1984, p.95, pl.68). A similar chair is illustrated in E. T. Joy, The Country Life Book of Chairs, 1967, fig.70.
