The original steel plate for the etched title of the first edition of Martin Chuzzlewit (London 1843-44), plate 40, part XIX-XX, drawn and executed by Browne, 230 x 146 mm. (9 1/16 x 5 3/8 in.), bevelled edges, the engraved side highly polished, very minor surface wear, the date neatly polished out, contained in a removable felt frame within green morocco gilt-lettered folding case, (broken), with Chapman & Hall's typed signed certificate of authenticity and an impression of the plate loosely inserted. The plate is Hatton & Cleaver's third state, but the date has been effaced (cf. H. & C. pp. 186 and 211).
