DUMAS, ALEXANDRÉ, the Elder. Manuscript, partially autograph, portions in the hand of an amanuensis, of his historical work "La Terreur Prussienne," inscribed twice and signed by Dumas (on pages 152 and 189), with numerous deletions, emendations and revisions, n.d. [1866-1867]. 213 pages, 4to, written on the rectos on 213 leaves of blue paper, a few leaves with marginal tears, bound with engraved portrait in blue morocco gilt, white watered silk end-leaves, spine worn, covers detached. Inscribed by Dumas on page 152 "Fragment du livre intitulé La Terreur Prussienne á Francfort, Episode de la Guerre de 1866," and beneath "A Prince de Metternich, 1 Juillet 1867." Inscribed again on page 189 "A son Altesse le Prince de Metternich." Dumas's account of the early years of the Franco-Prussian war was first published serially, then in book form, (in Paris in 1868, an English translation by R.S. Garnett appeared in 1915).
