A RARE BOY'S OKEGAWA-DO
17TH/18TH CENTURY
Comprising: An Eight-Plate Kabuto [possibly Haruta] of almost tsuinari no kabuto (acorn shape) type, with integral mabisashi, is of unlacquered iron with an even, roughened surface and even brown patina; the bowl is set with a small copper tehen kanamono and a separate plate whose ends form the fukigayeshi (one broken off) which are emblazoned with lacquer svastika mon, unsigned; no shikoro. Black-Lacquered Mempo, fitted with a three-lame yodare-kake and two otayori no kuge (securing pegs on the chin) and pierced with an asa nagashi no ana, unsigned. An Okegawa-do of five lacquered plates to the chest and six to the back, the front being emblazoned with a lacquer dragon roundel and the free plates laced with cords in multi-colored threads; the watagami (shoulder straps) are set with stenciled doeskin and fitted with two gilt copper-edged gyoyo (protective flaps) of leaf form; the bottom of the do is set with a kusazuri of eight sections with five lacquered iron plates each; Haidate set with five layers of ribbed and lacquer iron plates, each of nine sections. Tetsu-gote of lacquered iron plates. O-sode of seven lacquered iron plates. Tsutsu suneate of three lacquered iron plates. Pair of fur-covered shoes.
