Lot Essay

The 'C' Couronn poinon was a tax mark used in France between March 1745 and February 1749 on any alloy containing copper.

This commode, with its elaborately scrolled mounts and fine bois-de-bout marquetry, may be attributed to the celebrated bniste Jacques-Philippe Carel, mitre in 1723, on the basis of its close similarity to his documented oeuvre. These include a pair of commodes in Schloss Ludwigsburg, Bavaria (No. KRGT 5797) and another sold anonymously at Semenzato, Venice, 20 May 1983. Another commode with identical mounts, exhibited at the 1990 Biennale des Antiquaires by Gismondi, was sold anonymously at Versailles, 29 March 1992, lot 190.
