Lot Essay

Virtually all the ormolu mounts on this mirror may be seen on the superb Japanese lacquer commode by BVRB of circa 1750, formerly in the Embiricos Collection and sold at Sotheby's New York, 3 May 1986, lot 263. This commode is one of a group of seven similar commodes by BVRB in Japanese lacquer which includes the commode delivered by Hbert on 23 January 1745 to the Dauphine at Versailles.
The majority of ormolu mounts found on furniture by BVRB are not found on pieces by other makers. It can therefore be assumed that he designed his own mounts or that they were reserved by his bronzier for his exclusive use.
