A RARE IMPERIAL CARVED ZITAN AND JADE RUYI

The sceptre is elaborately carved in high relief and openwork along the slightly arched handle with the three Star Gods standing on rocky cliffs amid gnarled pine trees, embellished on the terminal, the mid-handle and the base with white jade plaques, each carved in relief with a spray of peony, bamboo, and flowering prunus tree respectively, the reverse carved with an imperial two line inscription, signed Yu Mingzhong (tiny chip to one jade plaque)

Lot Essay

The meaning of inscription may be translated as: Knowing benevolence and reason is like the spiritual meeting of earth and water.

Yu Minzhong (A.D. 1714-1779) was an official from the Imperial Hanling Academy.
