AN IVORY ARCHER'S RING AND FITTED BAMBOO VENEER BOX AND COVER

The ring carved into a broad cylindrical band with one end of the rim gently bevelled, inscribed around the exterior with a couplet followed by the characters Wen Zhaokan, carved by Wen Zhao; the slightly domed cover carved to the top and sides of the box with bats in flight amid ruyi clouds, with overlapping petal borders, pierced through the centre with a small rectangular aperture for suspension

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: Wan gu dong tou shi, san sheng zi zhai shen. The meaning can be translated as 'The Perpetuity of generations is of utmost importance to bring about the eternal state of being'.
