Private George Grey was one of only 10 of all ranks of the Scots Guards entitled to the South Africa Medal 1877-79. He was born near Aberdeen in 1852 and enlisted in the 3rd Foot Guards in February 1870, aged 18 years. He served in South Africa until December 1879, probably as an Orderly to an Officer of the Regiment, and was subsequently discharged at his own request in January 1884, after almost 14 years with the Colours.
