Private James Gusterson enlisted into the 11th Hussars in December 1853 and rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava on 25.10.1854. Discharged from the Army as 'unfit' in July 1873, he is known to have attended the first Balaklava Reunion in 1875 and was on the 1877 Membership List of the Balaklava Commemoration Society, but his name does not appear on the revised edition of 1879.
