Lot Essay

Caulker John Henwood was born in Torpoint, Cornwall in April 1836 and entered the Royal Navy as a Shipwright aboard H.M.S. Leopard in October 1862. Paid off in September 1866, he earned his living as "Dockyard Matey" in Devonport until joining H.M.S. Lynx as a Caulker's Mate in December 1868. Aboard his next ship, H.M.S. Modeste, he participated in the Perak operations and received advancement to Caulker in September 1877. Henwood was awarded the L.S. and G.C. Medal in June of the following year and was finally pensioned ashore in December 1884.
