Petty Officer 1st Class Harry Charlick was born in Newton Ferrers, Devon in November 1868 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Impregnable in June 1884, aged 15 years. Gaining steady promotion over the next few years, he was advanced to Able Seaman in March 1888 and joined H.M.S. Philomel in November 1891, in which ship he participated in the Expedition against Chief Nanna of Boheim between August and September 1894. Promoted to Leading Seaman soon afterwards, Charlick enjoyed several more seagoing appointments until gaining further advancement to Petty Officer 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Magicienne in May 1898. In that ship he also witnessed further active service, being present in operations off the South African coast in the Boer War and off Jubaland in the same period. Pensioned ashore in November 1906, he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve and was mobilised in August 1914. Charlick was finally discharged in April 1919, aged 50 years.
