Just 51 Distinguised Service Medals were awarded to the Royal Artillery in the 1939-45 War, Walker's being unique in combination with the Netherlands Bronze Cross.

D.S.M. London Gazette 25.8.1942 'For skill and bravery while serving in Defensively Equipped Merchant ships'.

Netherlands Bronze Cross London Gazette 6.4.1943. Recommendation states 'As a Gunner of the Netherlands' Motor Vessel Aagtekerk in January 1942, when she was attacked first by a Submarine and then by German aircraft, he acted with courage and ability when executing the instructions given by the Captain, probably owing to which the hostile warship was destroyed and the aerial attack beaten off'.

Sergeant John Walker, D.S.M., was presented with his Dutch Bronze Cross on 10.10.1942 and attended an Investiture at Buckingham Palace for his D.S.M. on 23.2.1943, the latter Decoration having been awarded in respect of the same incident in Motor Vessel Aagtekerk.
