Lot Essay

Sauce tureens in fanciful or amusing shapes were a conceit of 18th century dining tables, many based on faience prototypes, and all inspired by the new French cuisine with its many sauces. Figural shapes were perhaps the most rare, and armorial rarer still. One or two non-armorial budai sauce tureens have appeared on the market and at least one budai soup tureen (though more budai soup tureen stands are known). This example was sold Sotheby's London, 10 May 1988, lot 118, and again Sotheby's New York, 14 October 1993.
