With the arms of Fryer in a lozenge in the center encircled by famille rose enamel mantling, the well with a gilt and iron-red scrolling peony vine border and the wide rim with gilt and iron-red grapevine,

Lot Essay

D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 266 notes that this is the earliest of three Fryer services made in the 1735-40 period, all probably for daughters of Sir John Fryer, Lord Mayor of London in 1721 and a director of the South Sea Company.
