Lot Essay

Born in Pistoia in 1638, Luigi Garzi entered the Roman workshop of Andrea Sacchi at the age of 15. There he acquired the classical training that was to serve him throughout a career which consisted principally of commissions for Roman churches such as San Paolo alla Regola and San Silvestro in Capite (see F. Titi, Studio di pittura, scultura, et architettura, nelle chiese di Roma, II, 1987, p. 129, figs. 483-4 and p. 327, figs. 1210-11.).

We are grateful to Dr. Edgar Peters Bowron for confirming the attribution from a photograph.
