The prototype, formerly attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, is in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan (A. Falchetti et. al., La Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, 1969, p.170, ill.).
The sitter has been traditionally identified as Beatrice d'Este.
