An oak open armchair, probably Welsh, early 18th century
With an arched toprail, inset with a beech tablet inscribed R.I. 1742 above a chamfered panel with line inlaid arch, flanked by block and turned uprights with finials the shaped arms with overswept terminals, the tapered panelled seat with wavy front apron, on block and turned legs joined by stretchers with braganza front feet

This armchair is peculiarly distinctive in its detail.
The unusual armshape appears on a high-back armchair in Victor Chinnery Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge 1979, pg. 517, fig. 4.236, which was recorded in a private collection in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.
