See Schuyler V.R. Cammaron, Substance and Symbol in Chinese Toggles, Philadelphia, 1962, p. 77 where the author notes, "Mongols and Tibetans commonly wore toggles made from turquoise matrix. The Tibetans particularly favored this mineral, regarding the less flawed pieces as precious stones. For them turquoise was a sign of wealth, as well as a medical substance credited with specific curative powers. From Tibet, possibly through the influence of the lama monks, this reverence for turquoise passed on to the MOngols and eventually it reached the Manchu Court in Peking."
