A Black Stone Stele of Vishnu and Consort
Eastern India or Bengal, Pala Period, circa 11th Century
Finely carved with the deities seated in 'Royal Ease' on a double-lotus base, the stepped plinth with a central image of Garuda in adoration, Vishnu embracing his consort Lakshmi and holding the mace, lotus and conch, adorned with foliate armlets and beaded necklaces, the arched mandorla carved with celestial nymphs and a kirttimukha mask terminal
