A Stone Stele of Padmapani
Eastern India, Bihar, Pala Period, circa 10th Century
The four-armed deity very finely carved seated in the posture of 'Royal ease' over a lotus throne with pendent leg resting on a separate padma, holding the lotus and book in his left hands, his right hands in varada mudra and holding a rosary, wearing an elegantly pleated dhoti, an antelope skin draped across his shoulders and elaborate necklace, armlets and multi-stranded beaded ropetwist garland, his face with a benign expression surmounted by an elaborate topknot with tresses of hair spilling down over both shoulders, the throne base carved with two female deities in adoration centered by a kalasa and two columns, the rounded mandorla with beaded ropetwist and flame borders and a miniature image of Buddha Amitabha at left, with a dedicatory inscription along an arched outline on the mandorla
